Gurbaag & Karni's striking multi-use garden retreat

The initial challenge

The existing garage on their property needed to be fully removed, including the safe handling and disposal of an asbestos roof. The footprint also had to be extended, which meant integrating new foundations with parts of the existing base. Gurbaag and Karni were looking for a company that could handle the entire process from start to finish, without the need to coordinate multiple trades or suppliers.

Our approach

We worked closely with Gurbaag and Karni to develop a design that would maximise space, utilizing high-quality materials and a stylish finish. A lightweight galvanised steel kit framework was employed for its structural integrity and efficiency. Shou Sugi Ban, a traditional Japanese wood-burning technique that enhances its durability and aesthetic appeal, was selected for the cladding, offering resistance to fire, insects, and rot. The space was constructed with energy-efficient SIPs, and features bi-fold doors and a lantern roof light to enhance the connection with the outdoors. Our team managed all aspects of the project, from demolition and foundation work to interior finishing.

The finished room

The result is a stunning, multi-use garden room that sits beautifully in its surroundings. From the outside, the dark cladding and cedar accents create a sleek, modern aesthetic. Large doors and windows flood the space with light, while feature lighting adds an inviting glow in the evenings.

Inside, the room is bright, warm, and ready to use straight away. The walls and ceiling were fully plastered and painted, with clean lines and a contemporary finish throughout. Flush ceiling lights, hard-wearing flooring, and thoughtful heating and ventilation make it a comfortable and versatile space for work, relaxation or anything in between.
